The original mortal form of Imperial Sovereign Wenchang was Zhang Yazi, a native of Zitong in Sichuan during the Western Jin Dynasty. He lived on Qiqu Mountain, was benevolent, helped the poor with medicine and built schools to teach common people. After he died for loyalty, locals built shrines to worship him as the God of Zitong. Taoist scriptures record that he reincarnated seventy-three times and accumulated merits by doing good deeds. Multiple emperors bestowed noble titles upon him in Tang and Song dynasties. Emperor Renzong of Yuan formally granted him the title "Imperial Sovereign Wenchang". Since then, the star god of Wenchang merged with Zitong deity, becoming the patron of education, imperial examinations and official fortune. There is an old saying: "Confucius in the North, Wenchang in the South". His birthday falls on the 3rd day of the 2nd lunar month.
