According to the *Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka Sūtra*, countless kalpas ago, a wheel-turning king had two princes. The eldest prince became Guanyin Bodhisattva, and the second prince became Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. The king later attained Buddhahood as Amitabha Buddha. The two princes vowed to serve as his attendants, forming the Western Three Saints. The *Amitayur Dhyana Sutra* records that Mahasthamaprapta radiates purple-gold light, with a wisdom vase on his crown. The earth shakes wherever he arrives, and he saves all beings with supreme wisdom. In the *Shurangama Sutra*, he taught the Buddha-recitation practice: by wholeheartedly reciting the Buddha’s name to unite senses and attain enlightenment. In folk belief, he is the guardian deity for people born in the Year of Horse.
