Confucius, given name Qiu, courtesy name Zhongni, was born in the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period. He was a great thinker and educator, founder of Confucianism. He traveled across many kingdoms to spread the doctrines of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness. He accepted over 3,000 disciples, among whom 72 were outstanding scholars. His words and teachings were compiled into *The Analects*, which profoundly shaped Chinese civilization. Later generations honored him as the Literary Sage, paired with Lord Guan the Martial Sage. Confucian temples were built in successive dynasties.
